Driver Crashes into Fire Truck on Freeway near Willis

At approximately 1:30 am, North Montgomery County Fire crews, (Montgomery County ESD 1), responded to a Motor Vehicle Accident on Interstate 45 North and Longstreet in Willis, Texas.

As a standard protocol, two fire apparatus respond to freeway crashes, with one positioned for traffic control while the other attends to the accident scene.

During this particular incident, Ladder 91 was assigned as the blocking apparatus. While performing its duty to control traffic, a white Dodge Truck hauling a flatbed trailer collided with Ladder 91, resulting in damage to the front driver’s side of the apparatus. ESD 1 Fire Chief Jason Oliphant reported that all crew members, both inside and outside the apparatus, were not injured during the crash.

Chief Oliphant would like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the utmost importance of adhering to safety measures when encountering roadside law enforcement, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility vehicles, and TxDOT vehicles with warning lights. It is crucial for drivers to exercise caution and follow specific guidelines:
• Whenever possible, move out of the lane closest to these vehicles.
• If safely switching lanes is not feasible or if the road does not offer multiple lanes, reduce speed to 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
• On roadways with posted speed limits of 25 mph or less, reduce speed to 5 mph.

Maintaining safety on our roads is a collective responsibility. By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure the safety of both motorists and first responders during emergency incidents.
