Tis the Season, for Heating Fires!

Thursday morning chimney fire damages New Waverly home. Winter is the peak season for home fires.

A New Waverly resident discovered a fire in his attic early Thursday morning and summoned assistance from local fire crews. New Waverly Fire Stations 71 and 75 were on scene within minutes of the initial call and were able to limit damage to the ceiling above the living room.

An investigation revealed that the fire started when creosote accumulations in the home’s fireplace ignited, creating a chimney fire, a common occurrence during the peak months for heating fires.

From now through February, statistically more home fires will occur than at any other time of the year. As temperatures continue to fall, home heating will become the #1 cause of these fires.

One of the deadliest type of heating fires is those due to portable space heaters. Space heaters are responsible for 4 out of every 5 fatal home heating fires, with most of the fatal fires breaking out when occupants are asleep.

The number one recommendation from fire safety experts is to insure that your home has working smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. The New Waverly Fire Department, working with the Insurance Council of Texas, makes free smoke alarms available to residents. Firefighters will even come to your home and install them free of charge. Residents needing assistance can call the NWFD office at 936-344-6911.
