Rainy morning gives way to beautiful summer afternoon, whole town turns out for traditional 4th of July celebration

Steady rain fell for most of the day on July 4th, moving out just in time for the evening activities that round out the community’s popular Independence Day Celebration.

At 11am, residents gathered together for a BBQ lunch at the St. Joseph’s Hall and then many stayed to participate in the live auction featuring donated items from area businesses and citizens. All told, over 600 attended the BBQ, while thousands gathered all over town for the Fireworks Display and the day’s events raised over $38,000 to support area youth through the New Waverly Community 4-H Club.

That evening, residents and visitors began to assemble all over town in their favorite viewing spots, concentrated around Prosperity Bank in New Waverly, the site of the annual Fireworks Display put on by the New Waverly Fire Department. Many families return to the same spot year after year, visiting with their neighbors and friends while children play nearby.

The Children’s Bike and Pet Parade kicked off the evening’s events, complete with free Sno-Cones for the kids and a chance to mingle and enjoy the cool summer evening left over as the rains moved out of the area.

At 9pm, winners for the raffle were drawn, with the top three taking home a Honda four wheeler, a stainless steel BBQ pit, and a 50” TV.

Just after dark, New Waverly Firefighters began preparations and launched a spectacular fireworks show that lasted over 20 minutes. Part of the appeal of the event is the small town atmosphere and the ability to gather and mingle with fellow community members before the Fireworks show.

The Independence Day Events began many years ago as a fundraiser for the Fire Department until 2016, when the Fire Department and the New Waverly Community 4-H Club formed a partnership and funds raised on July 4th now go to support the youth of New Waverly.

The New Waverly Fire Department and the New Waverly 4-H Community Club are both organizations with deep roots in our community.

Officials with both organizations would like to thank everyone for their support and hope that you will invite family and friends to future events. Your support is what provides opportunities for the youth of New Waverly through the New Waverly 4-H Community Club.
